Action Plan
Considering the reflection aspect of this module has required me to be critical of my communication abilities and my intercultural awareness I have identified strengths I posses and skills I could improve. Although I have been trying to practice and develop these during this module and its assessments I have made three objectives to further this. I believe in following these I will be able to use this understanding about culture I have developed and apply it to my future intercultural interactions, hopefully with positive results, and in doing so I am completing the fourth step of the intercultural training model (Kohls & Knights 1994).
Listening skills
• Try and follow Scarnati’s (1998) list of rules to enhance my listening skills
• Practice active listening when dealing with customers at work when working on the shop floor during Thursday mornings
• Reflect upon this practice in relation to improving the six listening skills areas (Brownell, 1994)
Improve my Team work Communication skills
• Allocate a specific time each day to communicate with future groups ensuring there is enough time to adapt my communication to the individuals
• Follow ‘Ten Tips for Cross Cultural Communication’
• Follow ‘Ten Tips for the Intercultural Leader’
Further extend my ‘Cultural Profile’ by increasing how culturally ‘broad’ I am
• Learn German to that I can communicate better before my two week visit in September
• Take advantage of the exchange scheme at Brookes by applying to go to Australia in my fourth semester
