Reflection
After reading Trompenaars and Hampden-Turners (1997) definition of culture being as a mix of behavioral and value patterns I then looked into the seven dimensions of culture that are proposed. These dimensions suggest that cultures distinguish themselves from each other by their approach to problem solving (Trompenaars & Hampden-Turners 1997). The table below broadly outlines these seven dimensions. From studying this theory I can see that some culture is displayed and can be easily identifiable, ‘above the waterline’. However other aspects of culture such as these dimensions are ‘below the waterline’ and therefore are harder to see. I believe the diagram below displays this well with things like language being explicit and identifiable however more implicit factors such as the individualism of a culture may be harder to recognise.
Dimension Interpretation
Universalism vs. Particularism Importance of rules and relationships
Individualsim vs. Communitariansim Individuality against cooperation
Specific vs. Diffuse cultures Extent of involvement
Affective vs. Neutral cultures Exhibition of emotions
Achievement vs. Ascription Ascertaining status
Sequential vs. synchronic cultures Multi tasking
Internal vs. External control Control of situation
